How do other cultures celebrate special birthdays?
Though there are a few cultures in which birthdays arent widely celebrated, overall youd be hard-pressed to find a country that doesnt celebrate the day a person was born. But birthdays arent celebrated the same around the world. For example, some celebrations include birthday presents and others dont.
Interestingly, there are countries and cultures in which certain birthdays are considered more special or more meaningful than the others. This may mean the celebration is different or special birthday presents are given.
Celebrating your childs 16th birthday?
In North America, a teenagers 16th birthday is considered a milestone. The reason for this could be that in America teenagers are allowed to drive at age 16, so this age marks the first of many steps to autonomy and adulthood.
Youll usually see more sweet 16 parties for girls than you will for boys, but its still considered a milestone age. Parties can range from modest to quite grand, some families renting out hotel ballrooms and even hiring party planners. And due to the significance of the 16th birthday, its not uncommon to see a teenagers first car included in their birthday presents.
Are you celebrating your daughters 15th birthday?
Though sweet 16 parties are popular, the quinceanera is probably celebrated more widely. The quinceanera is meant to celebrate a girls 15th birthday, considered to be the transition from a girl to a young woman. Youll find quinceanera celebrations in many South American and hispanic countries.
Unlike a sweet 16 party, quinceanera celebrations are usually more formulaic and formal. Its similar to a debutante ball, presenting the girl as a young woman for the first time. The reception follows a general timeline: formal entry, the toast, dinner, the last doll ritual, a party, a cake cutting, then the last dance, which is usually shared with the father.
Birthday presents are often given during the celebration. But some gifts, like a tiara, are given before the ball so they can be worn or used during the party.
Have you or a loved one recently turned 20?
In many cultures, milestone birthdays indicate when a child has reached adulthood. In Japan, this transition to adulthood is celebrated on Coming of Age Day. Unlike in other cultures, the celebration is actually a specific day when all youth who have reached the age of 20 within the past year is congratulated. It always occurs the second Monday in January.
Ceremonies are held and 20-year-olds typically dress in traditional outfits. For young women this often means a kimono with long sleeves. For young men, this can mean a dark kimono or a western style suit. After the ceremony, many young people go to an after-party or go out drinking.
Though birthday presents arent typically given on Coming of Age Day, small gifts are often handed out.
